Herederos del Marqués de Riscal
Cellar D. O. Ca Rioja – Elciego (Álava)
Throughout its history, Marqués de Riscal has always been an innovative company, Pioneer and benchmark of a wine sector in continuous transformation.
In 1858 the construction of the first winery began, the increase in wine production motivates the expansion of the facilities in 1883. This will be followed by those of 1968 and 2000.
Inside the original winery (1860) is the Cathedral, a unique collection composed of bottles from all the vintages produced by the winery from the first vintage 1862, to the present day.
"To speak of the Cathedral is to speak of the living history of wines of the heirs of the Marquis of Riscal and of the wines of Rioja”
The grapes used in Marquis de Riscal wines grow at 1,500 Ha. divided between Elciego and neighbouring towns such as Leza, Laguardia or Villabuena.
The poor soils, coming from the different terraces of the Ebro River, are of calcareous clay type.
This sub-area of Rioja Alavesa has traditionally been characterized by producing wines with a good aging capacity, thanks to strong acidity musts and good tannic structure.
