History of Freixenet
Francesc Sala Ferrés founded in 1861 the Casa Sala, the first wine-exporting brand in Sant Sadurní d'anoia. His son, Joan Sala Tubella, continued with the business and, after the wedding of his daughter Dolors Sala Vivé with Pere Ferrer Bosch, begins the business of the cava, in 1914.

Pere Ferrer Bosch was the son of The Freixeneda, estate of the XIII century located in the High Penedès. The business was expanded and the first cava labels with the brand Freixenet Casa Sala began to appear. From the very first moment they chose to produce exclusively cava, a natural sparkling wine, following the method used in Champagne (France) since the 18th century. They installed their cavas in Sant Sadurní d'anoia (Catalonia), a town located in the heart of the region of Penedès. This region was already known since the time of the Roman Empire for the quality of the wines produced there.

In the twenties and thirties, the impulse of the founders and the assurance of quality of its products had already sought the reputation of the firm. They even started exports aimed at placing it in Spanish-influenced foreign markets and emerging markets at the time.

In this sense, the first establishment in the United States (New Jersey) dates from 1935. The Spanish Civil War, first, and the Second World War, then, slowed down the development of the company. In spite of everything, the company launched in 1941 the one that, over time, would become one of its star products, the Cava Carta Nevada, and in 1974 the cava black cord, current leader in export, present in more than 140 countries.
