Organic farming requires a greater workload and therefore generates employment in rural areas.
Regulation: organic farming has been legally regulated in Spain since 1989, when the regulation on the generic name ‘organic farming’ was adopted and applied until the entry into force of regulation (EEC) 2092/91 on organic production of agricultural products and indications referring thereto on agricultural products and foodstuffs.
In Spain, the control and certification of organic agricultural production falls within the competence of the Autonomous Communities and is carried out mainly by public control authorities, through territorial Ecological Agriculture councils or committees which are bodies under the responsibility of the relevant agricultural councils or departments, or directly by the Directorates-General attached to them.
All this means that the farm or industry where the product has been produced or processed is subject to the appropriate checks and inspections of the authority or body established for that purpose in the respective autonomous community. It constitutes, in turn, the only official guarantee that the product responds to the quality assumed by the consumer and complies with the rules laid down in Regulation (EC) 834/2007 and its Implementing Rules.
